Joni Mitchell: Clouds

If you are wondering what this got to do with anything, the answer is that this song is part of what goes into the Epic Clouds. I have treated them like an art and a science – attempting to weave in a beauty and artistry I think they deserve, whilst staying within the bounds of accuracy.

The song often referred to as Clouds is a classic whose real name is Both Sides Now. Here it is, delivered with style in the year 2000 by Joni, then aged 57 after a long career of creating thoughtful and interesting song.

Clouds / Both Sides Now

Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I’ve looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It’s cloud illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all
